Girls Prep was founded on the idea of helping African-American and Latinx girls and young women achieve their full potential in life. Since our organization was established, we have endeavored to help each girls self-identify with short-term and long-term goals to achieve the dream of attending college and obtaining a career that is self-gratifying along with providing them with an opportunity to advance their lives and the lives of their families.
We are a community based non-profit composed entirely of volunteers, we advocate for those who need our help. We are in need of women mentors who share our commitment, dedication, and enthusiasm to help young women in the DC Metropolitan area.
APPLICATIONS CAN BE FOUND BELOW
As a mentor, you will be connected with a protégé who is either in high school or college. You form a meaningful, enriching relationship with your Protégé to help them navigate the challenges of school, career, relationships, and more. In addition, Mentors and Proteges are encouraged to engage in virtual and in-person activities, as long as both Mentor and Protégé feel safe due to COVID and any other unforeseen changes.
Qualifications:
• Must be woman to mentor
• Have a college degree
• Actively participating in large group seminar lead meetings (4-5 meetings per school year)
• Meeting regularly your assigned Protege for a minimum of 4 hours per month
• Be an ally to young women, especially young girls and young women of color, and feel comfortable talking about professional and personal issues, such as academic and career problems, race, socioeconomic status, family dynamics, health, relationships, etc.
• Assist young women in setting and working toward goals
• Communicate with the protégé’s family, as needed
• Attend mentor training
• Attend meetings, mentor events and program seminars
• Women who identify as BIPOC are strongly encouraged to apply
Girls and young women who sign-up as Proteges gain support, community, and guidance from college-education women who are committed to their growth. Proteges gain skills in organization, improving discipline, increased clarity about your goals, and learning from someone’s experiences. Because of our dedicated mentors, Proteges will always have a cheerleader in their corner rooting for them!
Qualifications:
• Must be a woman
• Age 16-21
• Interested in attending or currently enrolled in a college or university
• Maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA
Girls Prep is a growing network of emerging leaders from all over the world. Align your strengths with our efforts to foster African-American and Latinx women college graduates. Volunteers are people who may not have the time to commit fully, but who support our events. Girls Prep volunteers assist us on projects, training initiatives, administrative duties, and with special events. Most events are virtual due to COVID precautions and are ad hoc as your personal time permits.
Girls Prep is always interested in having speakers to impart knowledge and encourage our Proteges. We seek speakers who have an expertise in their field. We want speakers who are eager to share their knowledge with girls who have academic and career aspirations. If you are interested, please contact us! Please also state whether your organization is able to cover any travel costs associated with the speaking engagement.
Having the support of parents allows for the Girls Prep mentoring experience to flourish. Parents are a key stakeholder in our mentoring model. Therefore, parents benefit from our program in having additional resources to (help) prepare their daughter(s) for college admissions, navigating through college and creating a solid foundation for a stable career after college all while leveraging technology.
